Max Rydqvist, baritone, holds a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the College of Fine Arts at Boston University (2018) and a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the State University of New York at Binghamton (2016). Residing as an active freelance vocal performer in the city of Boston, Max presently engages as ensemble member and soloist with the Cantata Singers of Boston and also as a soloist/section leader at the Church on the Hill of the Boston Society of the New Jerusalem. He has recently performed with local operatic companies and organizations such as MassOpera, Odyssey Opera, Cambridge Chamber Ensemble, Opera51, Opera on Tap Boston, and the Boston University Opera Institute.  He has most recently performed the role of Figaro in Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro” with Opera51 in Concord, Massachusetts. Beyond opera, Max is an avid art song and church singer who has participated in many recitals and concert performances during his time as a freelancer in Boston. Recent concert appearances include baritone soloist in a Nordic Art Song Recital with the Cantata Singers Chamber Series, bass soloist in Handel’s Messiah as well as baritone soloist in Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzer with Church on the Hill. In addition to performances with his own church, Max regularly sings as a bass section leader and soloist with other churches in the area, including the St. Columbkille Parish in Brighton and St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish in Chestnut Hill.

Max is presently enrolled as an associate member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and is a participant in the local Boston Chapter. He also holds a professional membership with the Voice Foundation. In addition to voice pedagogy, Max studied piano as well as the complementary subjects of music theory and musicianship over multiple semesters throughout college and graduate school. Committed to improving his comprehensive musical abilities, he has continued to hone his craft at the piano ever since.

After several years of immersion in pedagogic engagements – which has included events such as the NATS Summer Conference, the NATS National Mentoring Collective Program, the Boston Conservatory Vocal Pedagogy Workshop and piano composition studies –Max currently teaches both voice and piano to students spanning all ages at the Stage Music Center, through the At Your Door Music branch of Ensemble Music Schools, through the Note-worthy Experiences  Music Studio, as well as privately. Holding a penchant for disseminating equity between technical and expressive musical enhancement in his teaching, Max is fervent about creating a rigorous yet supportive and fun learning environment for each of his students. He is an advocate of student empowerment and loves working with children, whose naturally creative disposition commonly allows them to fluidly find their most authentic selves through the musical medium. Max’s ultimate hope is to make his students their own best teacher of the instrument(s) and music which they love.
