Bass Guitar, Acoustic or Electric Guitar - Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Bass Guitar and Acoustic or Electric Guitar?
Bass Guitar and Acoustic or Electric Guitar are very similar instruments except that a bass guitar has two fewer strings and a lower tuning. A typical bass guitar has 4 strings (EADG), while an acoustic or electric guitar has 6 lighter strings (EADGBE). A bass guitar is usually longer.
A bass guitar uses thicker strings than a regular guitar making the same note sound different on both instruments: Bass guitar plays notes an octave lower than a regular guitar.
Both acoustic or electric guitar and bass guitar have critical places in a band. Bass guitar generally has a foundational role, along with drums, to set the beat of the song and traditionally guitar is more in the spotlight. Solos can be made on both instruments.
What you learn in one instrument will be re-applied to the other if you decide to switch or to learn to play both.
Is it better to start taking guitar lessons on an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar?
There is no right or wrong answer. Although many schools recommend taking first guitar lessons on acoustic guitars before playing on electric guitars, we recommend to choose whichever one you want to play!
Don’t choose a type of guitar lessons because you were told it is best to start on an acoustic guitar or because electric guitars are easier to play. It is your passion for music and the songs you want to play that will enable you to achieve your musical goals. We would suggest going with the one you will practice the most to progress in your abilities.
Like many guitarists, you will eventually want to play on both types of guitars depending on the songs and mood.
Note that for young children, it is a good idea to start with an acoustic guitar to strengthen fingers and limit the initial financial investment. Practice is also easier with an acoustic guitar due to its ease of use and portability - an acoustic guitar does not need a source of electricity because it does not have to be plugged in. In any case, starting with an acoustic guitar will help transition to an electric later if that is the goal.
Is there a lot of instrument practice involved?
It is recommended to practice guitar every day whether it is just 10 minutes or more. The more days per week you practice, the faster you will enjoy reaching your musical goals. Also, practice will be rewarding as you will quickly play pieces of music that you didn't think you could master when you started.
We will help you or your child be enthusiastic about practicing bass / guitar! We set achievable goals for each practice session that combined with some self-discipline ensures enjoyable practice time.
For children, a regular practice early on, makes their future path a much more successful later as they will have acquired self-discipline while learning an instrument they love.
What type of guitar should a beginner buy?
If you are a beginner or a parent with a child taking guitar lessons for the first time, you should consider a balance between a good sounding guitar and price.
Both electric guitars and acoustic guitars can be very expensive. Although you should definitely get a guitar that has a good sound, you should not buy an expensive guitar unless you are committed to a long term. Your guitar instructor can guide you with the purchase options you have. Initially, you may consider renting a guitar before purchasing.
Note that for children, there are different sizes for guitar. As children develop quickly, it is also wise to find this sound - price balance. You can find on our website some recommendations for choosing a guitar depending on age/size. Feel free to ask your instructor for further advice.
If guitar lessons are for children, do parents have to stay in class?
Parent's presence during a class is not required but you are welcome to attend your child's guitar lesson if you wish to!
We don't require parents to stay to support children's self dependence. For children, studies have shown that taking music lessons helps with focus and discipline. Every child is different and if you believe that your child's learning curve would be better with you in the classroom, please feel free to stay and assist.
